 A weekend kayaking adventure off the coast of Long Island concluded in tragedy as officials retrieved the bodies of two men who had been reported missing, 27-year-old Shane Garcia and 25-year-old Aaron Montemarano, from Shinnecock Bay between the evening of Sunday, November 2, and the morning of Monday, November 3, as stated by New York State Police.

Garcia’s girlfriend notified the authorities of his disappearance at about 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, after he failed to come back home following his kayaking excursion earlier that day. Police subsequently found his work vehicle parked at the end of Shinnecock Avenue in Hampton Bays, which heightened concerns regarding his well-being.

That same day, Garcia had sent his girlfriend a picture of himself and Montemarano kayaking close to the Ponquogue Bridge, a haunting image that now symbolizes their last moments together, as reported by Southampton Town Police.

The search operation included various agencies, such as the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team, which employed SONAR technology and diving operations to find the two men. In spite of the extensive search efforts, the outcome was tragic as their bodies were recovered.

Jessica Sarah, Garcia’s girlfriend, shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, paying homage to the man she characterized as her “best friend and person.” She expressed:

“Five years feels too short, but I am incredibly thankful for the moments we had together. You weren’t solely my partner — you were my closest ally. I appreciate all the happiness and the sorrow. Thank you for your love even during my darkest times. I will love you endlessly, my baby boy… until we reunite.”

Earlier, Sarah encouraged friends and community members to help in the search, highlighting Garcia’s kind-heartedness:

“Those of you who know Shane can attest that he is the type of person who supports everyone — let’s reciprocate for him.”

The Southampton Town Police Department is still looking into the events leading to this incident. Authorities have not yet provided information regarding what led the kayaking outing to become fatal, but the community is grieving the unexpected loss of two young individuals.
