The Topeka community, along with the Hayden Catholic family and numerous players from various eras, is expressing sadness over the passing of Coach Tom Stringer, who died on Friday at the age of 64. A remarkable figure in Kansas high school football, Coach Stringer has left behind an incredible legacy characterized by strong leadership, high standards, and a steadfast commitment to the young men he mentored both during and beyond their time on the field.

A distinguished alum of the 1979 class at Hayden, Tom’s path is marked by significant accomplishments and deep loyalty. After achieving prestigious All-America recognition at Pittsburg State University as an offensive lineman, he returned to the institution that molded him—Hayden Catholic High School. From 1992 until 2006, he was at the helm of the Wildcats’ football team, cultivating a program founded on discipline, teamwork, and passion. His guidance led Hayden to its inaugural Class 4A state championship in 1998, a remarkable season finishing at 13–0, which was followed by another flawless state title in 2004. The identity, pride, and longstanding tradition of success associated with the Wildcats unmistakably reflect his influence.

Tom’s coaching statistics—131 victories against 35 defeats over a 15-season span—illustrate his expertise in the sport, but the real indication of his influence lies in the lives he impacted. From the practice fields to the locker rooms, Coach Stringer transformed young men into self-assured athletes and responsible leaders. His enthusiasm, passion, and firm belief in each member of the team fostered an atmosphere where character, dedication, and perseverance were as valued as touchdowns and accolades.

Throughout his career, his colleagues acknowledged his contributions. He secured a position in the Pittsburg State Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Hayden Catholic Hall of Fame in 2023, a moment he regarded as highly significant. He stated, “Every day I think about this place. Every day.” Tom’s commitment to Hayden was profound, and that commitment was reciprocated many times over by everyone who held him in high regard.

Coach Stringer was also scheduled to receive yet another prestigious recognition: induction into the Kansas Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame on December 7, further validating a career characterized by excellence, integrity, and devotion to the game he cherished.

For his family, former players, coaching colleagues, and all those fortunate enough to benefit from his guidance, may you find solace in the knowledge that his legacy will persist as a source of motivation. The lessons learned, the pride he fostered, and the moments shared will endure in every huddle, every game, and every life he influenced.
