Wilmington, NC – Just after midnight on Tuesday, officers from the Wilmington Police Department, along with Fire and EMS teams, arrived at the scene of a crash involving a vehicle and a building in the 120 block of Greenfield Street. Upon their arrival, they found that a vehicle had collided with both a pedestrian and a building.
The pedestrian, who has been identified as 31-year-old Alec Chambers, was declared dead at the scene by EMS personnel. A crime scene was set up, and initial findings suggest that the driver, 34-year-old Michelle Masiello from Carolina Beach, was behind the wheel of a Jeep when she hit Mr. Chambers, who was located near the edge of the parking lot along Greenfield Street. After the impact, the Jeep moved forward, hitting a tree and metal fencing that enclosed the outdoor seating area of a nearby bar. Reports indicate that Ms. Masiello had left the bar just prior to the incident.
Ms. Masiello was apprehended and taken to Novant Health NHRMC for a medical examination. She faces charges including Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving Endangering, Damage to Property, and Driving While Impaired. Currently, she is being held at the NHSO Detention Center with a secured bond set at $255,000.
The investigation is being handled by the Traffic Unit of the Wilmington Police Department. Individuals with any information about this event are urged to get in touch with the Wilmington Police Department at (910) 343-3600.
The Wilmington Police Department expresses its sincerest sympathies to the relatives and friends of Mr. Chambers. Further information is not available for release at this moment.
