Deshawn Brazell's Passing and Tribute: Deshawn Brazell Passes Away While in Custody at Hamilton County Jail: Inquiry in Progress

Deshawn Brazell Death and Obituary – On December 26, 2025, during the early morning hours, Deshawn Brazell, a 36-year-old inmate, passed away while in the care of the Hamilton County Jail located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His passing has triggered an internal inquiry by local authorities as they seek to understand the events related to the occurrence.

As reported by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, corrections officers found Brazell unresponsive in his cell situated in the Bravo housing unit around 3:00 a.m. This discovery was made during a routine welfare check, which is a regular process to confirm the safety and health of inmates at the facility. Once deputies realized that Brazell was unresponsive, they promptly notified the medical personnel.

Jail staff and emergency responders present in the facility immediately started lifesaving efforts, including administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), to attempt to revive him. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to the scene and took Brazell to a nearby hospital for additional care. Unfortunately, despite ongoing medical efforts, he was declared dead shortly after reaching the hospital.

As of late December 2025, the official determination of Deshawn Brazell's cause of death has not been made public. Authorities have noted that an autopsy and medical investigation are anticipated to be crucial in establishing the cause and nature of death. More information will be shared once the inquiry and medical assessment are finalized.

In light of the incident, Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp has instructed the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office to perform a comprehensive internal investigation into Brazell’s death. This investigation will encompass an assessment of jail protocols, staff behavior, surveillance recordings, and medical response procedures. Once this internal review is completed, the results will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for an independent and formal evaluation to ascertain if any further measures are necessary.

At the moment of his demise, Brazell was being detained at the Hamilton County Jail facing several charges. Court documents reveal that he was accused of various offenses, including criminal trespassing, vandalism or malicious mischief, retaliation against a judge, juror, or law enforcement officer, and failure to appear in court. Authorities have not specified if any of these charges were directly associated with the circumstances of his death.

Brazell’s death is noted as the fifth in-custody fatality at the Hamilton County Jail in 2025, which has generated renewed public concern regarding the safety of inmates, the quality of medical care, and the overall oversight within the jail. Previous in-custody fatalities have similarly prompted investigations and discussions pertaining to the conditions and protocols in the facility.

As the inquiry proceeds, officials have conveyed their condolences to Brazell’s relatives and assured that transparency will be prioritized throughout the review process. Family members, along with the public, are looking forward to additional information as authorities strive to offer clarity and accountability regarding this unfortunate event.
