The incident unfolded around 12:46 p.m. when officers from the Combes Police Department tried to pull over a man later named Andres Arizmendi. Arizmendi was wanted for felony warrants originating from Harlingen. Rather than complying, the suspect chose to flee, which sparked a pursuit that soon entered the boundaries of Harlingen.

As the chase continued, other agencies, including Cameron County Precinct 5 Constables, became involved. Law enforcement reported that the suspect drove recklessly at high speeds in crowded areas, creating a significant risk for both drivers and pedestrians. Throughout the pursuit, Arizmendi’s car collided with several other vehicles, yet no serious injuries resulted from these impacts.

The chase concluded at the intersection of East Harrison Avenue and Business 77 when Arizmendi’s vehicle became inoperable. Officials reported that once he exited the vehicle, Arizmendi was armed and began firing at the law enforcement present. The officers responded with gunfire in reaction to what they identified as a clear threat to their own safety and the safety of individuals nearby.

During the exchange of gunfire, Arizmendi was hit multiple times. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene; however, he was declared dead at the site. Officials verified that none of the officers, deputies, or civilians experienced injuries during the incident.

Subsequent investigations disclosed that Arizmendi was sought in connection with an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon involving a relative that allegedly took place on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. Authorities noted that the severity of this prior incident led to an urgent need to locate and arrest the suspect.

In accordance with standard procedures for officer-involved shootings in Texas, the investigation has been assigned to the Texas Rangers. The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office also came to the scene and will carry out an independent analysis of the occurrence. Officials indicated that this approach is aimed at ensuring openness and ascertaining whether the use of force was in line with state regulations and departmental guidelines.
