Individual Passes Away Following Health Crisis During Intake at Tuscaloosa County Jail

TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, Ala. — A 64-year-old individual has passed away following what appears to be a medical emergency while in confinement at the Tuscaloosa County Jail, as confirmed by officials.

Captain Jack Kennedy from the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit reported that the incident took place around 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, while the man was being admitted into the jail. The deceased has been identified as John Earl Norman, 64, hailing from Cottondale.

Kennedy indicated that law enforcement had encountered Norman earlier that day, discovering he had an active warrant. Following this, Norman was taken into custody and brought to the Tuscaloosa County Jail for processing. During the admissions procedure, he reportedly began to exhibit symptoms of a medical emergency before becoming unconscious.

Deputies at the jail and medical personnel present on-site quickly provided assistance, which included performing CPR and using a defibrillator, according to Kennedy. Emergency medical technicians also arrived at the location, but despite efforts to revive him, Norman could not be saved and was declared dead.

Officials mentioned that the entire event unfolded within the booking area, where Norman was under continuous observation by jail personnel and monitored by surveillance cameras. Currently, his death is suspected to be due to an undetermined medical condition, as per Kennedy's statement.

“Given that the death transpired while he was in custody, the VCU, along with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, will carry out a death investigation,” Kennedy stated. “Since the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office operates the jail, the inquiry will involve officers and supervisors not connected to the sheriff’s office.”

The investigation is still in progress, with further information anticipated to be released after the forensic evaluation and assessment process is completed.
