Jeff Thorne Naperville, IL Passing, Tribute: Ex-North Central football coach and Hall of Fame member has passed away

The community at North Central College, alongside numerous former athletes, colleagues, and friends, is grieving the loss of Jeff Thorne, who passed away on Tuesday night after a brave fight against Stage 4 stomach cancer. He was with his family as he gently completed a journey characterized by strength, belief, and an unwavering affection for those and the program to which he dedicated his life.

Jeff's influence on North Central football is deeply embedded in the history of the program. He was part of the coaching team from 2002 to 2021, guiding countless student-athletes—initially as the offensive coordinator, subsequently as the assistant head coach, and finally as the 25th head coach in the program's legacy, taking over from his father, the renowned John Thorne.

During his tenure, the Cardinals achieved remarkable accomplishments. Jeff steered the team to its inaugural NCAA Division III National Championship on December 20, 2019—a landmark that fulfilled a shared aspiration with his father, solidifying his status as a legendary figure within the program. Over his six seasons as head coach, he achieved an impressive record of 65–10, including six consecutive playoff appearances, four CCIW championships, and a national runner-up result in his last season. His players amassed numerous All-America honors and received hundreds of accolades from conferences and regions throughout his leadership.

However, those who were close to Jeff remember much more than victories and awards. He was a mentor, an educator, and a cultivator of character. He valued the Cardinal Manual Meetings tradition, prioritizing notions of leadership, integrity, discipline, and personal development beyond the game of football. His aspiration was to nurture not just outstanding athletes, but also remarkable individuals—teammates, partners, fathers, and men of purpose.

Current head coach Brad Spencer reflected, “Jeff was both my mentor and friend… His enthusiasm for the sport and his dedication to developing All-American individuals will remain an integral aspect of his legacy.”

This autumn, Jeff was honored with induction into the North Central College Athletics Hall of Fame, joining his father and other Cardinal legends—a well-deserved tribute for a man whose impact will resonate for years to come.

The whole Thorne family—including Joanna, his wife, their children, and his parents—continues to be in the thoughts and prayers of the extended North Central and Auburn communities. Payton Thorne, Jeff’s son and former Auburn quarterback, shared the news with deep sorrow, bolstered by an overwhelming outpouring of support from teammates, coaches, and fans.

Jeff approached life with belief, commitment, and an unyielding "Refuse to Lose" ethos—one that the Cardinals will uphold in every game and every season.

May he find eternal rest, and may his legacy persist in inspiring all who had the privilege to learn from, collaborate with, or be guided by him.
