Port St. Lucie Police Fatal Shooting—A standard service call in Port St. Lucie developed into a tragic gunfight on the evening of December 1, 2025, resulting in serious injury to a police sergeant and the death of the suspect. The occurrence took place in the typically peaceful Tradition neighborhood, alarming residents and leading to a multi-agency investigation into the unfortunate incident.
Police officers from Port St. Lucie were called to the 11000 block of SW Lake Park Drive at around 6 p.m. after receiving reports about a conflict among neighbors. Initial information suggests that the issue was related to a mental health dispute involving one of the people living at that address. Six officers arrived at the location and began to evaluate the situation, but things quickly escalated into violence.
Shortly after their arrival, an adult male suspect came out of the house with an assault rifle. He suddenly opened fire on the officers, igniting a chaotic and perilous shootout in the neighborhood. Law enforcement officials indicated that the officers had to return fire to protect themselves and nearby residents.
Sgt. Erik LeVasseur, who has served the Port St. Lucie Police Department for 27 years, was hit in the face during the clash. Other officers immediately went to help him while emergency medical teams were dispatched to the area. He was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce for urgent care.
Chief Leo Niemczyk confirmed that Sgt. LeVasseur had surgery and is currently in stable condition. Despite the seriousness of his injuries, medical professionals are hopeful for his recovery. Both community members and fellow officers have shown significant support for the dedicated sergeant, recognized for his professionalism and commitment over nearly thirty years of service.
The identity of the suspect, who was struck by return gunfire from the police and died on the spot, has not been publicly disclosed. There were no additional reported injuries among officers or civilians. Law enforcement stressed that, based on the current investigation, the suspect acted independently.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is now in charge of the investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings within the state. Their responsibilities include reviewing body camera footage, interviewing witnesses, and conducting forensic examinations to reconstruct the entire series of events.
Chief Niemczyk reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat, highlighting that the incident was confined to the disturbance call at the residence. He also praised the courageous actions of the officers who responded promptly in a life-threatening situation.
As the investigation progresses, additional information is anticipated regarding the suspect, the reasoning behind the attack, and the events that led to the armed confrontation. Meanwhile, the community is concentrating on supporting Sgt. LeVasseur in his recovery and searching for answers following this tragic and unforeseen instance of violence.
