Shantal Snowden Upper Darby Obituary and Death: 34-Year-Old Mother Dying During Custody Transfer; Former

Shantal Snowden Upper Darby Obituary and Death – The community of Upper Darby is experiencing intense sorrow after the heartbreaking loss of Shantal Snowden, a 34-year-old mother of three who was tragically shot during a child custody exchange on Friday afternoon. This event, which took place close to the junction of Copley Road and Locust Street, has been categorized by officials as a murder-suicide, leaving family, neighbors, and friends in shock and deep sadness.

Investigators report that the shooting occurred around midday while Snowden was transporting her three kids—aged 1, 4, and 6—to meet their father for a scheduled custody exchange. What was meant to be a simple handover quickly spiraled into a horrific act of violence. Darlene Snowden, Shantal's mother, stated that the father of two of the children, a 45-year-old former partner, entered her daughter’s car and confronted her. A spoken argument swiftly intensified, culminating in gunfire.

According to authorities, the ex-boyfriend shot Shantal from a short distance before turning the gun on himself. A neighbor quickly responded heroically, sprinting to the car to rescue the frightened children immediately following the shooting. Shantal Snowden was declared dead at the location. Her former partner was taken to a local hospital and placed on life support but succumbed days later after life-sustaining treatment was halted, as reported by her family.

The three young children are believed to have witnessed the tragic event and are now facing challenges in processing the trauma. Their grandmother, Darlene Snowden, has stepped in to offer support and stability, mentioning that the children cry for their mother during the night and are trying to comprehend the abrupt loss.

Darlene characterized her daughter as an extraordinary and committed mother who dedicated herself to ensuring her children had joyful and fulfilling lives. She noted that Shantal had ended her relationship with her unstable ex-boyfriend around 18 months prior and had since married a “wonderful man.” Despite previous incidents of verbal disputes, Darlene stressed that there was no known history of physical aggression, making the tragic incident even more astonishing.

“She adored her kids. She did everything possible to make their lives as bright as she could,” Darlene expressed, reminiscing about her daughter’s commitment and generosity.

The Upper Darby Police Department, along with the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, is still looking into the case. Officials have not revealed the identity of the ex-boyfriend or indicated if any prior protective orders had been issued. No arrests are anticipated, as the situation is being classified as a murder-suicide.

As the inquiry proceeds, attention has turned to aiding Shantal Snowden’s surviving children. Friends, neighbors, and members of the community are uniting to offer emotional and practical support while also raising awareness about the risks associated with domestic disputes and gun violence. The passing of Shantal has created an enduring absence in Upper Darby, though her legacy as a loving and devoted mother will live on through her children and all those who knew her.
