Authorities have stated that this deadly incident involved a suspected impaired driver and marks the city’s 11th traffic-related fatality of the year, highlighting rising concerns about impaired driving and road safety.

The Salem Police Department reported that the accident took place at around 1:43 a.m. on the 1800 block of Lancaster Drive NE, situated between Market Street and Sunnyview Road. At the time of the collision, Hopkins was riding as a passenger in a Nissan sedan heading north. The vehicle was being operated by 33-year-old Karlie Dolan, a resident of Salem.

Investigators indicated that the Nissan collided with the back of a tow truck that was parked on the right shoulder of the road. The tow truck was stationary and in the process of loading another vehicle when the crash happened. Despite the crash's severity, the driver of the tow truck fortunately sustained no injuries.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene soon after the crash occurred. Unfortunately, Trisha Hopkins was pronounced deceased at the site due to the injuries she suffered in the collision. The abrupt loss has left her family, friends, and the larger Salem community in deep mourning.

Following the incident, Karlie Dolan, the driver of the Nissan, was taken to a nearby hospital for assessment. Once she was medically cleared, she was arrested and processed at the Marion County Jail. Police reported that initial tests revealed Dolan’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was over three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent in Oregon at the time of the incident.

As a result of the inquiry, Dolan is facing multiple serious charges, including second-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII), reckless driving, and reckless endangerment. Officials indicated that these charges highlight the grave repercussions of driving while impaired and the tragic loss of life caused by the incident.

The ongoing investigation is being led by the Salem Police Traffic Team. Officers are continuing to analyze evidence, such as vehicle information and witness accounts, to completely reconstruct the timeline leading to the crash. Authorities have not disclosed whether more charges will be pursued as the investigation progresses.

This deadly accident serves as a serious reminder of the risks associated with driving under the influence and the lasting effects such choices can inflict. Law enforcement officials are encouraging drivers to make safe decisions during late-night hours, advocating for the use of designated drivers, ride-sharing services, or alternative safe transportation methods.
