It is with profound sorrow that we share the news of Dr. Dugald McMillan’s passing, a highly esteemed endodontist from Chattanooga, Tennessee, who was cherished in both his local community and the dental profession. Dr. McMillan, who followed in his father's footsteps as a second-generation dentist, left us unexpectedly, leaving a remarkable legacy of excellence in dentistry, a strong dedication to his patients, and a family that cherished him greatly.
Raised in the quaint town of Woodland, Alabama, Dr. McMillan developed a love for dentistry early on. He proudly graduated from the University of Montevallo, where he received his Bachelor of Science in 2005 before advancing his education at the noted University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry (UAB). After obtaining his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) in 2009, he committed himself to serve his community with the same level of care and commitment that his father, also a dentist, had provided throughout his career.
Initially, Dr. McMillan worked in general dentistry in New Hope, Alabama, a community that required superior dental services. However, as he advanced in his profession, he developed a keen interest in endodontics, the dental specialty focused on treating the interior of teeth, notably root canals. His ambition for expertise in this specialty prompted him to return to UAB, where he completed further training and obtained his Certificate in Endodontics in 2021. He distinguished himself during his residency by serving as Chief Resident in his second year, showcasing both his leadership skills and his devotion to his profession.
Dr. McMillan’s skills in endodontics were complemented by his compassionate approach to patient care. His friendly and welcoming demeanor made him a preferred choice among those who came to him for treatment. He adhered to a conservative philosophy in patient care, always prioritizing the least invasive options first and engaging closely with each patient to explore their choices thoroughly, ensuring they felt fully informed and confident in their treatment plans. His patients valued not just his clinical expertise but also his willingness to listen, his openness, and his sincere concern for their health.
In pursuit of delivering the highest standard of care, Dr. McMillan equipped his practice, Chattanooga Endodontics, with cutting-edge technology. He incorporated advanced Zeiss microscopes for exceptional accuracy in procedures, as well as massage chairs designed for patient comfort, especially to ease nervous individuals, leaving no detail overlooked in fostering a supportive and effective treatment atmosphere.
Dr. McMillan was profoundly dedicated to lifelong learning and teamwork. He was an engaged member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Endodontists, the American Dental Association, the Tennessee Dental Association, the Chattanooga Area Dental Society, and the Chattanooga Dental Study Group. These memberships highlighted his commitment to remaining at the leading edge of his profession and to contributing to the broader dental community.
Beyond his work life, Dr. McMillan valued time spent with his loved ones. He is preceded in death by his spouse, Natalie, and their daughters, Kate and Julia. An enthusiast of nature, he found joy in mountain biking and aquatic pursuits, using these activities to refresh himself and bond with the environment.
The passing of Dr. Dugald McMillan has profoundly impacted his patients, peers, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him. He leaves behind a remarkable reputation in dentistry and a significant influence on the numerous individuals he affected. His family, his professional practice, and his community will always remember him not just for his dental expertise but also for his compassion, commitment, and zeal for aiding others.
