The University at Albany community is in sorrow over the passing of Erin Couture, who served as the Director of Student Experiences for the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC), and died on New Year’s Day.
Couture became part of CEHC in 2018, initially taking on the role of academic advisor before advancing to the position of Director of Student Experiences, where she played a key role in fostering student involvement and achievement in the college. During her time there, she gained great respect for her commitment to students, insightful leadership, and dedication to hands-on learning.
In her role, Couture was responsible for leading CEHC’s initiatives related to experiential education, international opportunities, and professional growth. She oversaw all programming related to professional development and directed coursework focused on applied learning for both undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, her duties included managing CEHC’s internship programs, peer education, capstone projects, and undergraduate research initiatives—essential components of the college’s applied learning framework. Furthermore, she organized and coordinated various CEHC events each semester aimed at helping, connecting, and engaging students academically and professionally.
Couture's educational background underscored her passion for learning and communication. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication from The College of Saint Rose and a Master of Science in Academic Advising from Kansas State University. In acknowledgment of her impactful, behind-the-scenes efforts, she was honored with the Unsung Hero Award in 2020.
Her colleagues and students remember Erin Couture as a compassionate professional who consistently exceeded expectations in advocating for students and enhancing their educational journeys. She was a cherished part of the CEHC community, noted not just for her professional contributions, but for her kindness, empathy, and genuine care for others. Outside of her professional life, she was a beloved daughter, and her loss is profoundly felt by all those who had the honor of knowing and loving her.
The University at Albany expresses its heartfelt sympathies to Couture’s family, friends, colleagues, and students as they reflect on her passing and celebrate her enduring impact.
