CASTAIC, Calif. — An investigation is currently underway regarding a deadly accident that resulted in the death of 60-year-old Bulmaro Alvarez Chavez on Saturday night. He was thrown from his vehicle during a collision with a suspected drunk driver on the northbound 5 Freeway close to Templin Highway.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office, officers responded to notifications of a multi-vehicle accident at approximately 11:10 p.m. When they arrived, they found Chavez, the operator of a white Jeep Cherokee, who had been ejected from his automobile and sustained fatal injuries. He was declared dead at the site.
The individual driving a silver Toyota Camry, who has been identified as 21-year-old Martin Enrique Cazares from Wasco, was determined to be under the influence of alcohol at the moment of the accident. After conducting an investigation at the location, Cazares was taken into custody and subsequently booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on accusations of felony DUI and felony vehicular manslaughter.
Officials from CHP expressed profound regret regarding the situation, highlighting the tragic and avoidable nature of incidents related to DUI. “This heartbreaking crash serves as a clear reminder of the severe consequences associated with impaired driving,” stated Lt. Munoz, the acting commander of the CHP Newhall Area. “A single reckless choice has resulted in the loss of an innocent person. We are dedicated to removing impaired drivers from our roads and safeguarding our communities from such tragedies.”
The inquiry into the fatal incident is still in progress.
