MORGANTON, N.C. — An unfortunate incident in Burke County resulted in the death of 29-year-old Japheth Jesse Obanner from Morganton on Saturday, November 8, 2025, after he was hit by a vehicle while walking along U.S. Highway 70 close to Snowhill Church Road, as reported by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers indicate that the accident took place at approximately 6:08 p.m., when Obanner, who was positioned in the center of the road, was struck by an eastbound 2001 Ford F550 operated by 75-year-old Joan Marie Carter from South Dakota. Tragically, Obanner succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Officials stated that Carter did not sustain any injuries from the accident. The preliminary investigation revealed that being impaired and walking on the roadway contributed to the incident. Troopers also mentioned that Obanner was dressed in dark attire and was traversing a poorly lit area of the highway during the time of the accident.
Authorities concluded that there will be no charges filed in relation to this incident.
U.S. 70 was closed briefly for around two hours while troopers carried out their investigation on-site and cleared the road.
The community is grieving the passing of Japheth Jesse Obanner, whose life was cut short in this sorrowful incident.
