Professor Dr. Samuel Ewen Obituary Update: Familial Heartbreak in New Orleans, Cherished SUNO Educator
NEW ORLEANS, LA — A tranquil neighborhood in New Orleans is shaken following a heartbreaking family tragedy that resulted in the death of Dr. Samuel Eweni, a professor at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), and left two of his daughters injured. Officials report that the accused is his son, Chukwuebuka Eweni, who is now in custody facing charges of second-degree murder along with two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
The disturbing incident took place on Tuesday evening at the family residence on Pebble Drive. Relatives informed WWL Louisiana that the night began as it typically would—until, suddenly, Chukwuebuka allegedly seized a knife and assaulted his father and two sisters.
Neighbors and family members are grappling with the reasons behind this unexpected violent episode. Those familiar with Chukwuebuka indicate that he had struggled with mental health issues for an extended period; however, they stressed that he had never exhibited violent behavior prior to this incident. “It was just a typical evening,” a relative expressed quietly. “No one could have foreseen something like this.”
Emergency services arrived swiftly, but despite their best efforts, Dr. Eweni was declared deceased at the scene. One daughter received treatment at a nearby hospital and has since been discharged, while the other remains hospitalized but is anticipated to make a recovery.
Following the attack, family members mentioned that Chukwuebuka went to a mental health facility in New Orleans East, a place he had previously visited for treatment. Unaware of the unfolding situation, hospital personnel reportedly transferred him to another location in Jefferson Parish, where law enforcement subsequently located him and took him into custody on Wednesday morning.
The news regarding Dr. Eweni’s passing has sparked deep sorrow throughout the SUNO community. Renowned for his enthusiasm for teaching and commitment to his students, Dr. Eweni was a well-regarded figure in the College of Business and Public Administration.
In a moving statement, SUNO Chancellor Dr. Joseph Bouie, Jr. remarked:
“Dr. Eweni was not just an instructor; he served as a mentor and a beacon of hope for many of our students. His impact on the university’s goal of changing lives through education will be honored and remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this extremely challenging period.”
As authorities persist in their investigation concerning the circumstances surrounding the tragic stabbing, the community mourns the passing of a man characterized as both intelligent and kindhearted—a teacher whose influence will endure through the many lives he touched.
